چکیده

We report an experiment designed to evaluate the impact of loss aversion on rent-seeking contests. We find, as theoretically predicted, a negative relationship between rent-seeking expenditures and loss aversion. However, for any degree of loss aversion, levels of rent-seeking expenditure are higher than predicted. Moreover, we find that the effect of loss aversion becomes weaker with repetition of the contest. * I am indebted to my supervisors Martin Sefton, Klaus Abbink, Bouwe Dijkstra and Richard Cornes for their incredible support and valuable comments; their remarks influenced this study considerably. In addition, I am especially grateful to Chris Starmer for very useful suggestions on the experimental design. Thanks also to Ping Zhang, Xianghua Zhang and Bin Xiao for assistance in conducting the experiments. Funding of the experiments by the Centre for Decision Making and Experimental Research (CeDEx) of the University of Nottingham is gratefully acknowledged. I wish to thank Simon Gachter, Alex Possajennikov, Robin Cubitt and Daniel Seidmann, as well as participants at the CREED-CeDEx Workshop, Nottingham, 2005, and the Economic Science Association Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting, Hong Kong, 2006, for helpful and encouraging comments. Any errors remain my own.

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility

Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...

The Size of Rent-seeking Activity in Iran's Foreign Trade Sector: An Application of the DSGE Approach

Rent-seeking in the trade sector is an outcome of restrictions imposed on tariffs and import quotas by a government. In an effort to acquire more privilege in foreign trade, labor allocates a part of its time-effort to rent-seeking activity, while cutting down on production work. Given the importance of rent-seeking activity due to restrictions imposed by the government in the Iranian economy, ...

Loss Aversion for time: An experimental investigation of time preferences

This paper investigates decisions about inter-temporal tradeo s. The objective of the study is to explore the valuation of time itself without tradeo s between time and consequences. In an experimental study subjects made decisions about waiting time, where the time was subject to risk. We nd that subjects are risk-seeking for decisions about time, which leads to the conclusion that waiting tim...

X-efficiency versus Rent Seeking in Chinese banks: 1997–2006

This study demarcates cost-inefficiency in Chinese banks into X-inefficiency and rent-seeking-inefficiency. A protected banking market not only encourages weak management and X-inefficiency but also public ownership and state directed lending encourages moral hazard and bureaucratic rent seeking. This paper uses bootstrap non-parametric techniques to estimate measures of X-inefficiency and rent...

The Appearance of Homo Rivalis: Social Preferences and the Nature of Rent Seeking

While numerous experiments demonstrate how pro-sociality can influence economic decision-making, evidence on explicitly anti-social economic behavior has thus far been limited. In this paper we investigate the importance of spite in experimental rent-seeking contests. Although, as we show, existing evidence of excessive rent-seeking is in theory compatible with fairness considerations, our soci...
